ROBERT ABELL desired to be made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony,
19 Oct. 1630, and took the freeman's oath 18 May, 1631. He early had six acres
granted to him "in the plaine." (Weymouth Land Grants, 262, 267, 273.)
His wife was Joanna , who
survived him. The family removed to Rehoboth in 1643. He probably came in the
fleet with Governor Winthrop. The settlement of
his estate, 9 Aug. 1663, mentions "his eldest son, his widow, his daughter
Mary and his five children." (Register, 6: 96.)
Children, born at Weymouth:

daughter of Rev. William and Elizabeth Smith of the North Parish of Weymouth.
They resided in that part of Braintree (now Quincy) near the Quincy Adams
station on the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, and the house in which
they lived is still (1920) standing. (See the Genealogical History of Henry
Adams, 1898.)
NATHANIEL' ADAMS, a dish-turner, had land granted to him between 1642 and
1644. Four of his five lots were in the "East
field." He was born near 1601, and his wife's name was Sarah. He was made a
freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 26 May,
1647. He removed to Boston before 1652. He must be distinguished from Nathaniel
Adams of Boston, who by a wife, Mary, had ten
children born in Boston, 1653 to 1677. Nathaniel Adams, Sr., of Boston,
dish-turner, "being aged," made his will 14 July, 1675, be-
queathing to his wife Sarah, sons Nathaniel, David, Abraham, Jonathan and to
Isaac Adams if he be alive and shall return to Boston, to grandchild Sarah,

was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 2 Sept. 1635, and had seven
lots granted to him in Weymouth between 1635 and 1644. He probably came from
Dorsetshire or Somersetshire, and may have sailed as a servant to disguise his
identity. He was elected from Weymouth a Deputy to the Great and General Court
which was held at Newtowne (Cambridge), 2 Nov. 1637, and again 12 Mar. 1637-38.
He, or his family, was somehow related to John Bibbell (Bibble) of Boston and
Malden, who made his will at Hull, 21 July, 1653, by which Adams, his wife and
five children each received twelve pence apiece. (Register, 9: 307.) He was a

JOHN ALGER, son of Andrew Alger of Scarborough, Me., of Boston, made his
will with a power of attorney, 4 Apr. 1690. He
calls himself John Alger, carpenter, formerly of Weymouth, residing in
Charlestown, and grants power of attorney to his only sister Elizabeth to
receive his wages and effects. Witnesses: Samuel Phipps and Hannah Adams;
recorded 11 June, 1716. (Suffolk Probate.)
THOMAS ALGER came in the Charity or Swan, arriving at Wessagussett in
June or July, 1622, in Weston's Company from Newton
Ferrers in Devonshire. He was one of the four who escaped death, and was now
(1624) at Christopher Levett's plantation at Casco on the coast of Maine. (Levett's
Voyage, 1623-24, published in Collections of the Massachusetts Historical
Society, Third Series, 8: 158-190.) In a letter which John Winter wrote to
Robert Trelawny, 7 Oct. 1640, Winter says that certain men "did know the
River of Casco before ~-our pattent was granted," and among them names:
"Thomas AIger of Newton Ferrers, which dwelt at the house at Casko about 10
ycares since." (Trelawny Papers, 250-251.) That house was probably built by
Christopher Levett in 1624, and Alger was one of the inhabitants of it in 1630.
Another letter from Winter to Trelawny, dated at Richmond's Island, 7 Oct. 1640,
states that Thomas Alger was employed by Trelawny "the first yeare" on
his plantation from 2 Mar. 1633, to 18 June, 1634. (Ibid. 244.) Winter did not
know if he were living in 1640. He may, or may not, be the Thomas Alger who
appears at Taunton in 1665.
